The girls enjoyed visiting Cafe 2010 on Tuesday to celebrate filling our class reward jar with warm fuzzies. I feel fortunate to have a group of girls who are so kind and respectful. Let's finish the year strong!
In math, we continued to work on reading and writing decimals. We made a lot of connections to dollars and cents, which helped the girls place decimals (to the hundredths) on a number line. We will move on to rounding and then discuss comparing and ordering decimals this week.
In language arts, the girls wrote a brief paragraph about themselves to share with students in Malaysia who are learning English. After they wrote their paragraph, they recorded themselves reading their writing to help the Malaysian students improve their English skills. Also, the girls organized their biography notes into outline form for their upcoming oral presentations. This week, the girls will be creating a virtual room for their famous person. In addition, we will begin our next class novel, Number the Stars by Lowis Lowry. This is a wonderful story about Annemarie a ten-year-old girl living in Copenhagen during World War II. The story follows her life as well as her best friend, Ellen, who is Jewish. We will be discussing the novel in large and small groups. There will be opportunities to read some pages in class and some pages will be assigned for homework as well, so please have your daughter bring her book to and from school each day. In their Google Drive accounts in the Shared with Me section, the girls have a folder that contains audio files of the book being read. They are welcome to listen and read along if they would like.
In history, we read about the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl, and the girls continued collecting facts for their country research projects. Once the girls have finished taking notes, they will begin creating a digital travel guide.
