Weekly Update!

The girls did an amazing job on Saturday!
What a busy and exciting week! Thank you to all the volunteers who worked tirelessly to make GPSF Day and Daisy Days such a huge success. During Grandparents and Special Friends Day on Thursday, the girls worked on a 3WT creative writing story with their guests. They had a relatively short amount of time to generate ideas and type their stories, but click here to see what they came up with together. The slides are organized alphabetically. Click here to see pictures from Grandparents/Special Friend's Day.

In math, we reviewed for the Unit 6 quiz. The girls worked really hard, and I was very happy with the results. In the coming weeks, we will continue with addition and subtraction of decimals and move on to multiplication and division of decimals. We will be doing some fun projects to go along with these concepts.

In language arts and history, we met twice in our literature circle groups for our class historical fiction novel Number the Stars, and the girls completed an individual, group, and peer evaluation. I was impressed by their level of preparation and insightful comments during our in-person group meetings as well as on their written evaluations. The girls also worked on their Roomstyler rooms for their biography book project. They are really enjoying creating their virtual rooms. For our unit on Immigration, the girls continued to work on their country research projects. I am allowing the girls to choose how they present their information. Many girls have chosen to use Buncee, Glogster, and Google Slides. I can't wait to see the final products.

For our final writing lab, we will be doing a fun Mother's Day and Father's Day project. If you would please e-mail me pictures of your whole family (including your daughter) OR individual mother/daughter and father/daughter pictures (or all three...if you have them), I would appreciate it! If I could have them by Wednesday, that would be great! Thanks so much.

Weekly Update!

The naturalization field trip on Wednesday took on a whole new meaning when we had the privilege of watching one of our very own teachers, Mrs. Dorian, take the oath and become a U.S. citizen. Seventy individuals from twenty nations of origin began their lives as American citizens that day. It was a truly memorable experience for all of us. The girls also learned about the U.S. Marshal Service, toured holding cells, and visited Judge Lauck's chambers. Judge Lauck graciously took time out of her busy schedule to chat with the girls and answer questions.
In math, we talked about writing decimals as fractions in lowest terms and the girls started to memorize commonly used fraction and decimal equivalents. We also discussed rounding decimals, comparing and ordering decimals, and adding and subtracting decimals. We will continue to practice these concepts and apply this knowledge in a real-world context this coming week. Then we will review for the Unit 6 quiz, which will be this Friday.

In history and language arts, we wrapped up our discussion of the Great Depression and continued our study of immigration. The girls learned about the naturalization process, and we had fun taking an online Civics practice test. Also, I introduced our class novel Number the Stars by Lois Lowry from a historical perspective, and the girls were placed into literature circle groups. They were given some in-class time to start reading the first few chapters, but the majority of the reading will take place at home. Just a quick reminder that the girls have been given an audio version of the novel in their Google Drive. We will begin our literature discussion groups on Tuesday.

Weekly Update!

This was our first "normal" week in a long time. The girls are slowly getting back into the swing of things after weeks of rehearsals for the fourth-grade play. Their hard work paid off and the show was amazing! A video of the play is linked on Dr. Kapentanis' blog

The girls enjoyed visiting Cafe 2010 on Tuesday to celebrate filling our class reward jar with warm fuzzies. I feel fortunate to have a group of girls who are so kind and respectful. Let's finish the year strong!

In math, we continued to work on reading and writing decimals. We made a lot of connections to dollars and cents, which helped the girls place decimals (to the hundredths) on a number line. We will move on to rounding and then discuss comparing and ordering decimals this week.

In language arts, the girls wrote a brief paragraph about themselves to share with students in Malaysia who are learning English. After they wrote their paragraph, they recorded themselves reading their writing to help the Malaysian students improve their English skills. Also, the girls organized their biography notes into outline form for their upcoming oral presentations. This week, the girls will be creating a virtual room for their famous person. In addition, we will begin our next class novel, Number the Stars by Lowis Lowry. This is a wonderful story about Annemarie a ten-year-old girl living in Copenhagen during World War II. The story follows her life as well as her best friend, Ellen, who is Jewish. We will be discussing the novel in large and small groups. There will be opportunities to read some pages in class and some pages will be assigned for homework as well, so please have your daughter bring her book to and from school each day. In their Google Drive accounts in the Shared with Me section, the girls have a folder that contains audio files of the book being read. They are welcome to listen and read along if they would like.

In history, we read about the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl, and the girls continued collecting facts for their country research projects. Once the girls have finished taking notes, they will begin creating a digital travel guide.
