Weekly Update!

The girls and I had a heart to heart on Tuesday, and I reminded them how important it is to be kind to each other. We've had such a great year, and I'm hopeful we will end the year strong!

We wrapped up several activities including Spelling, Wordly Wise, Immigration country presentations, and our math review. We discussed area and perimeter and continued to practice forming singular and plural possessive nouns. We will play Kahoot this week to apply our grammar skills.

On Friday, we will have our "Just 4 Fourthies" end of the year party from 10:30-until the end of the school day. The girls will swim from 10:30-11:30 and then enjoy pizza and a movie in the Lower School Assembly Room with a sweet treat as well. Your daughter will need a swim cap, hair brush, bathing suit, towel, goggles, and undergarments to change into afterwards. The girls can come to school with their bathing suit under their clothes. However, if you'd prefer she change at school, there will be time to do so.

Weekly Update!

We had an action-packed last full week of school! The girls enjoyed visiting the Mini-Maker Fest (put on by the 8th-grade Creative Technologies class) on Tuesday, hearing author Jessica Day George speak on Wednesday, and stocking up on great books at the book fair on Thursday.

We wrapped up our final unit in math, and the girls will complete their error analysis worksheet on Monday. I will average the grades once they are done with their corrections. We will cover a couple of geometry concepts this week and then start reviewing for the end-of-year assessment, which will be on Wednesday, May 30th.

We learned so much from the amazing presentations during Immigration Day on Friday! The girls were incredibly prepared and knowledgeable about their countries. I loved their creativity with their props and costumes, and I was so impressed by the authenticity of their diary entries. I look forward to the remaining presentations on Monday!

Weekly Update!

Middle School Thoughts
mentimeter.com

I can't believe we only have a little more than three weeks left of school. The girls returned from "Moving Up Day" excited but a little worn out for sure. They reflected on their experience and we created a word cloud with their thoughts about the day (see above).

In math, we worked on estimating with decimals and completed words problems that incorporate addition, subtraction, and multiplication of decimals. Then we covered dividing with decimals. We will continue to review all four operations and the quiz will be on Wednesday. The final new topic of the year will be area and perimeter, and then we will start reviewing all of the concepts we have covered this year.
In preparation for Immigration Day, which is on May 17th, the girls have been researching their countries and documenting their journey to America. They are writing diary entries from the perspective of an emigrant who has left their home country for a better life in America.

In language arts, we continued with our literature circle groups for Number the Stars, and we will wrap up the book in the next week or so. The girls have really enjoyed this novel and have done a great job with their independent group activities. In addition, we discussed plural nouns and singular/plural possessive nouns. We livened things up by answering questions by doing either a tree pose or jumping jacks. Anything to make grammar more entertaining- right?

We wrapped up the week with a wonderful lunch outside with our Big Sisters, and on Thursday and Friday, we knocked out quite a few biography presentations. I have been blown by the girls' confidence while speaking in front of the class, and their creativity with their props and digital rooms.

Happy Mother's Day to all of you amazing moms!

Weekly Update!

It was nice to get back into our regular routine. The girls worked really hard, and we were able to accomplish quite a bit this week.

In math, we continued to work on addition, subtraction, and multiplication of decimals. The girls enjoyed using what they learned to go on a virtual shopping trip to buy some spring clothes. This week, we will practice estimating in order to check if an answer seems reasonable and then move onto division of decimals. We will continue to work on these concepts in smaller groups.

In language arts and history, we reviewed action, helping, and linking verbs. We also discussed the prefixes pre, post, fore, and ante, and the girls created a collaborative Google Slide (see below for what they have completed so far). They had to incorporate at least three words, which contain the prefixes mentioned above.

In addition, we met as a class to discuss the historical significance of the events taking place in our novel Number the Stars, and then the girls got into their smaller literature discussion groups. I was impressed by how well they are picking up on a lot of the more minor details in the story, and how they are using their inferencing skills to draw conclusions about events in the story. Finally, in preparation for Immigration Day, the girls took a virtual tour of Ellis Island and completed some notes.
